In kids ministry we partner with the child’s first and primary spiritual teacher–the parent. But often parents are not sure how to engage their kids in talking about biblical or spiritual matters. A natural place to begin that conversation is to talk with kids about what they did and learned in Sunday School (or other learning time). But, again, many parents feel unsure how to do this. In a recent discussion, one of our editors–James Hargrave–asked: "How many parents, when picking their child up at the door, ask, \’Did you have fun?\’" How can we help parents engage their kids at a deeper level with what they are learning?
Give parents something simple to do with their kids that will help draw their kids into a discussion about Bible truths. Provide a discussion starter or a couple of simple questions to ask as the family drives away from church. Offer a couple of simple activities that busy families can fit into their schedules.
If you use Lifeway resources for Sunday School (Bible Teaching for Kids) or Kids Worship (Worship KidStyle), then we have a free tool already available. The Kids in Sunday School (KISS) Connection is a free subscription e-mail for parents and leaders. Each week the e-mail contains simple activities for families to use wtih their kids – suggestions for different ages all in one place.
To subscribe, go to the Life Truths Facebook page. Click on "Join My List" in the left column. Enter your e-mail address and the message will appear each week in your inbox. You can encourage parents to sign up themselves…or you can sign up and send/give the information to your parents. (Here’s a sample of the KISS Connection e-mail.)
Parents are so important to a child’s spiritual growth. How do you help parents become spiritual leaders for their children?
