Bibles come in all shapes, sizes, and translations, with all kinds of "extras" and special helps. Because the Bible is a very special book, selecting one for a child involves more than simply walking into a bookstore and picking one up from the shelf. What criteria do you use when selecting a Bible for a child? Here are some suggestions to help make a decision.
- Consider the size of the Bible—The Bible should be large enough for the child to easily hold, but not too large to be bulky, heavy, or difficult to carry.
- Provide the complete Bible—The Bible is God’s complete Word. The Old Testament is not invalidated or replaced by the New Testament. Children need to know that both Testaments are included in the Bible and are equally important.
- Search for user-friendliness—The Bible should be easy to use. Purchase a Bible that contains a list of the Bible books and page numbers or tabs to assist in locating hard-to-find books and verses in the Bible.
- Look for realistic pictures—Because the Bible and the people and stories found in the Bible are true, pictures in the Bible should be as realistic as possible. Avoid cartoon or fantasy-type illustrations which may develop unrealistic images. Children should learn that the Bible is a true book in which they can believe every word, and pictures should be equally believable.
- Avoid "Bible Books" that are like storybooks rather than Bibles—Many resources are labeled "Children’s Bibles" which are simply Bible storybooks written on a child’s level. When selecting a Bible for children, make sure it is a true Bible, not a storybook.
- Consider the reading level—Different translations have different reading levels. If a child is not familiar with the words or concepts used in the Bible, it will be difficult for him to read and comprehend.
- Consider the translation—No matter which translation you select, make sure it is an accurate translation of the biblical text. Over the generations, the Bible has been translated into hundreds of languages.
- Look for study helps—As children learn to use their Bibles more, they may wish to know more about the customs or lifestyles of the people. Many Bibles include great maps and other study helps to assist children in growing and understanding more about the time in which the Bible passage was written.
- Test durability—If used correctly, a child’s Bible will experience a lot of wear and tear. Ensure the cover is of good quality. Consider purchasing a Bible carrying case to protect and add length to the life of a child’s Bible.
- Allow children’s input—Allow your child input in selecting the Bible. Since he is the one who will carry and use the Bible, allow him to select the color or cover design.

Every year on Promotion Sunday we always give each first grader a Bible. In the past, they were always given very cheap Bibles that were not very kid friendly. This year we finally got a set of Bibles that were made for kids. They still have the complete set of 66 books, but are in a more age appropriate translation, have fun application activities, and fun pictures.
Out of all of the changes I have made at my church as the Children’s Pastor this was one of the most popular among parents. Sunday after noon I had parents facebooking me describing how their child was still looking at their new Bible, and others sarcastically complaining about how their older child didn’t get a cool Bible.
