As a Preschool volunteer at my church, I can say that being flexible is in the job description. You have to be OK with the fact that things won’t always go as planned. The lesson may get interrupted, a child may have an accident, and the point of the lesson may not catch on as quickly as you’d like. Unfortunately, I really love to have everything under control. I love for lessons to go off without a hitch and for myself to look like a Preschool Volunteer Superstar. I’m here to tell you that has hardly ever happened. Who am I kidding? It has never happened.
It’s important to remember that being flexible allows for the Lord to move. It’s when we give Him control of the situation that He works through us. I can think of many times working with children where things have not gone as planned, but so much better. It’s a million times better when you know you had no control and that it was only God, making His Will known.
The next time you feel like everything is going wrong and you’ll never get through the next hour, remember that what may seem like chaos to us might be exactly the right environment for God to move. After all, the meaning of being flexible is having the strength to bend without breaking.
