When I was a girl, I learned the good news about Jesus at a very young age. He was sent to save me from my sin and if I believed in him, I would have eternal life. I heard this story over and over again and finally, I checked the box at VBS that I wanted to invite Jesus into my heart and my parents helped me pray the prayer of salvation. That was a very real experience for the 9-year-old me.
After that experience, I continued to hear Bible stories every week at church. They were usually told in full, with the gospel presentation tagged on at the end. However, those two things rarely connected for me – especially Old Testament stories. If I learned about creation, I didn\’t understand that the Son of God was there – though it clearly says in the Bible that he was. If I learned about the sin of Adam and Eve, I didn\’t understand that God had a plan from the beginning – His son would die for my sin.
Though I’m embarrassed to say, I didn\’t understand that Christ is throughout the Bible – pointing to the glory of God. When I finally did, it changed my faith – more than that, it changed my response to the gospel. My obedience is a result of a deeper understanding of who Christ is.
Parents, teachers, ministers, pastors – our children must understand that each story in the Bible points to the glory of God – His Son, Jesus. It is this deep truth that changes hearts, convicts sin, and commands a response. Morals, obedience and integrity all come from that response. Together, let’s teach the story that always reveals His glory!!
