As kids get ready to head back to school, they can suit up with the armor of God to prepare for any challenges they may encounter. This hands-on activity not only engages children in artistic expression but also helps them understand the spiritual armor described in Ephesians 6:10-18.
"Finally, be strengthened by the Lord and by his vast strength. Put on the full armor of God so that you can stand against the schemes of the devil. For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers of this darkness, against evil, spiritual forces in the heavens. For this reason take up the full armor of God, so that you may be able to resist in the evil day, and having prepared everything, to take your stand. Stand, therefore, with truth like a belt around your waist, righteousness like armor on your chest, and your feet sandaled with readiness for the gospel of peace. In every situation take up the shield of faith with which you can extinguish all the flaming arrows of the evil one. Take the helmet of salvation and the sword of the Spirit—which is the word of God. Pray at all times in the Spirit with every prayer and request, and stay alert with all perseverance and intercession for all the saints." Ephesians 6:10-18
Crafting the Armor of God Shield
Materials Needed:
- Shield templates (you can prepare these in advance by cutting them out of cardboard or providing pre-cut templates)
- Metallic or shiny paper (optional but adds a nice touch)
- Markers, crayons, or colored pencils
- Stickers (optional)
- Glue, tape, or stapler
Instructions:
- Prepare the Shield Templates:
- Begin by preparing shield templates. You can download our printable template here or create your own by cutting shield shapes out of sturdy cardboard. Make sure each child has one shield to decorate.
- Gather Decorating Supplies:
- Set out metallic or shiny paper, markers, crayons, or colored pencils for coloring and decorating. You can also provide stickers with symbols related to the armor of God (such as a cross, shield, helmet, breastplate, etc.).
- Decorate the Shields:
- Invite the children to decorate their shields to represent different pieces of the armor of God described in Ephesians 6:10-18:
- Helmet of Salvation: Draw a helmet at the top of the shield and write “Salvation” or a symbol representing salvation.
- Breastplate of Righteousness: Decorate the center of the shield with a breastplate shape and write “Righteousness” or draw symbols of righteousness.
- Shield of Faith: Draw a shield shape and write “Faith” or decorate it with symbols of faith.
- Belt of Truth: Add a belt shape around the shield’s center and write “Truth” or draw symbols of truth.
- Shoes of the Gospel of Peace: Draw or write symbols representing shoes or the gospel of peace at the bottom of the shield.
- Invite the children to decorate their shields to represent different pieces of the armor of God described in Ephesians 6:10-18:
- Encourage Creativity and Discussion:
- As the children decorate their shields, encourage them to think about what each piece of armor means and why it’s important in their faith.
- Discuss how each piece helps Christians stand strong in their faith and resist spiritual challenges, especially as they prepare to head back to school.
- Share and Display:
- Once the shields are decorated, allow each child to share their creation with the group. Discuss the symbols they chose and why they are meaningful.
- Display the shields around the classroom or in a designated area to serve as a visual reminder of the armor of God.
