Families spend hours upon hours in the car together each week and what tends to be routine interaction can be quickly transformed into reconnection in the hustle and bustle of everyday life. There seems to be no end to the shuttling from soccer practice to rehearsal to baseball to the library, school activities and church functions. Parents have an incredible opportunity to set aside the drive-time and create a special place where decompressing the day together and sharing highs and lows becomes the new favorite hangout time of the week.
The great command in Deuteronomy 6 instructs us to teach God’s words to our kids when we sit in our houses and when we walk along the road, when we lie down and when we get up. The biblical instruction for families to teach God’s Word today is still the same, but the way we go about our day looks a bit different. While few of us walk along the road anymore, most of us are close to our kids for hours each week driving along the highways and byways of our lives.
As we seek to have meaningful interactions with our kids, travel time is prime time for spiritual conversations and simply connecting with your kids, but it helps to have some go-to questions in your pocket. We need to be intentional to redeem our car time, using it at as a jumping point for faith conversations. Here are a few day-to-day conversation starters you can use with your kids and share with the parents of the kids in your ministry to help them connect with their children along the road.
