Teaching Kids Security Through the Character of God
“This generation is bombarded with content about how unsafe their world is, and with good reason. Terrorism, racial unrest, recession, global competition, complexity, uncertainty—these are just a few of the realities that shape the lives of students and children in our ministries. They do not know a world where these dangers don’t exist.” (Flip the Script, pg. 84)
Knowing that each child that walks through our doors is facing things outside of their (and our) control, how can we help them know, believe, and live in the security that comes from God? How can we help them understand that security in God is something stable, trustworthy, and stronger than any problems they may face?
Week after week, we get to share with kids the truth from God’s Word. Our Bible stories bring to light the amazing ways God has worked throughout history and continues to work today. When it comes to understanding and believing that we are secure in God, we can lean on the very character of God Himself.
God Is Omnipotent
“Oh, Lord GOD! You yourself made the heavens and earth by your great power and with your outstretched arm. Nothing is too difficult for you!” (Jeremiah 32:17)
Omnipotent means, “having unlimited power; able to do anything.” Kids can know that God is omnipotent, all-powerful, and able to do absolutely anything. There is nothing outside of His control. When things are scary or worrisome, we can remember that God is holding the whole world in His hands. While we may not know why things happen the way they do, we can hold tight to the One who does. When we help kids know that God is omnipotent, their sense of security grows in the midst of uncertainty.
God Is Omnipresent
“Where can I go to escape your Spirit? Where can I flee from your presence?” (Psalm 139:7)
Omnipresent means, “widely or constantly encountered; common or widespread.” Kids can know that God is omnipresent—He is everywhere all the time. While this may seem impossible, it is something that sets God apart. There is nothing He doesn’t see and nowhere anyone can hide from Him. When kids feel alone or forgotten because of situations and circumstances, they can know that God is always with them no matter what. And when kids know God is always with Him, they can find an unshakable sense of security and peace.
God Is Omniscient
“For God is greater than our hearts, and he knows all things.” (1 John 3:20b)
Omniscient means, “knowing everything.” God is omniscient, and He knows everything. He knows everything that has happened, is happening, and will happen. He knows every thought and feeling in every heart. There is nothing God doesn’t know! When kids feel lost or confused, they can turn to the One who knows them, knows their situation, and knows how everything will turn out. They can trust that He knows what’s going on, knows what they need, and cares about everything happening within and around them.
As we help kids navigate this sometimes dark and uncertain world, kids can know that the God who made them and loves them is all-powerful, all-present, and all-knowing. Because of who God is, we can be secure in Him.
