The start of a new year is filled with hope, excitement, and the chance to start fresh. It’s a time when many people make resolutions and set new goals. But for followers of Jesus, the New Year is also a beautiful reminder of something even more incredible: God is a God of second chances. He doesn’t just give us a fresh start once a year—He offers it to us every day.
We can explore how God’s forgiveness, grace, and love give us the chance to begin again, no matter how many mistakes we make. Take the opportunity to remind yourself or your kids ministry of some stories of people in the Bible who got their own “second chances” and fresh starts with God.
Jonah: A Second Chance to Obey
Jonah was a prophet who received a clear message from God: “Go to the city of Nineveh and tell the people to turn away from their wicked ways.” But Jonah didn’t want to go. Instead of listening to God, he ran in the opposite direction and boarded a ship to get as far away as possible!
You probably know what happened next: A huge storm came, Jonah was thrown into the sea, and he was swallowed by a giant fish. While he was in the belly of the fish for three days, Jonah prayed and asked for God’s help. When he was finally spit out onto dry land, God gave him the same mission again. This time, Jonah listened and went to Nineveh.
God gave Jonah a second chance to obey, and Jonah discovered that God is patient and forgiving. Even when we mess up, God doesn’t give up on us. He offers us a fresh start, just like He did for Jonah.
Key Lesson for Kids: No matter how badly we mess up, God is always ready to forgive us and give us a second chance to do what’s right.
Peter: A Second Chance to Follow Jesus
Peter was one of Jesus’ closest disciples. He promised that he would always stay by Jesus’ side, no matter what. But on the night Jesus was arrested, Peter did something he thought he’d never do: He denied knowing Jesus three times (Luke 22:54-62). When Peter realized what he had done, he was heartbroken.
But Jesus didn’t give up on Peter. After His resurrection, Jesus gave Peter a chance to make things right. He asked Peter three times, “Do you love me?” Each time Peter said, “Yes, Lord, you know I love you.” Jesus told Peter to feed and take care of His followers (John 21:15-17).
Peter’s story shows us that even when we make big mistakes, Jesus welcomes us back with love and gives us a new beginning. Peter went on to be a leader in the early church, sharing the good news of Jesus boldly.
Key Lesson for Kids: Even when we feel like we’ve let God down, He is always ready to forgive us and invite us back into His loving arms.
God’s Promises of New Beginnings
The Bible is full of reminders that God loves to give us fresh starts and second chances:
- Lamentations 3:22-23 (CSB) – “Because of the Lord’s faithful love we do not perish, for his mercies never end. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness!”
- 2 Corinthians 5:17 (CSB) – “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has passed away, and see, the new has come!”
- Psalm 103:12 (CSB) – “As far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us.”
These verses remind us that God’s love and mercy are never-ending. When we confess our mistakes and ask for forgiveness, He wipes away our sins and gives us a clean slate. Every day is a new beginning with God! We hope you take the opportunity of the new year to reflect and redirect to be in alignment with God’s will.
