Valentine’s Day is quickly approaching! Kids will likely celebrate at school or during extracurricular activities, exchanging cards and enjoying fun events. This is a wonderful opportunity to help them reflect on the greatest love of all—loving the Lord your God. What better time to teach about the ultimate relationship of love that comes from Him?
Materials:
- Paper plates (one per child)
- Red, pink, and purple construction paper
- Markers or crayons
- Glue sticks
- Glitter or stickers (optional)
- A small printout of Deuteronomy 6:5 (“Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength.”)
Instructions:
- Create the Heart Base: Have the kids cut out heart shapes from the construction paper. They can use red, pink, or purple for a Valentine’s theme.
- Write Ways to Love God: On each heart, encourage kids to write one way they can show love to God (e.g., praying, singing worship songs, reading the Bible, helping others).
- Assemble the Hearts: Glue the hearts around the edge of a paper plate to create a “heart wreath.”
- Add the Verse: Glue the verse (Deuteronomy 6:5) in the center of the paper plate as a reminder of why we love God.
- Decorate: Let the kids decorate their wreaths with glitter, stickers, or other embellishments to make them unique.
Message Tie-In: Talk about how loving God with all our heart, soul, and strength means putting Him first in everything we do. The craft serves as a visual reminder to love God every day, not just on Valentine’s Day.
