We know you’re always looking for ways to thank your volunteers! While handwritten notes, appreciation gifts, and special meals are all wonderful ways to say “thank you,” public recognition can be just as impactful, especially in today’s digital world. While we know volunteers don’t dedicate their time in order to be recognized, it certainly feels good to be publicly appreciated!
One simple but meaningful way to show appreciation is through a Social Media Volunteer Spotlight. By featuring different volunteers, you can honor their service while inspiring others to get involved.
How to Create a Volunteer Spotlight Series
1. Plan Your Features
Decide the cadence of featuring volunteers. You could feature one volunteer per day for a period of time, or you could do it on a weekly or monthly basis. You may need to work with whoever is in charge of social media at your church to coordinate posting!
2. Pick a Fun Name
Choosing a fun name for your feature isn’t necessary, but adds a special touch! Here are some ideas:
- Kingdom Builder of the Month
- Faithful Servant Spotlight
- Joyful Servant of the Month
- Kids Ministry Champion
3. Gather Volunteer Stories & Photos
Ask each featured volunteer a few simple questions to share their heart for serving. Here are some examples:
- What inspired you to start volunteering?
- What’s your favorite part about serving?
- How have you seen God at work in your ministry?
- What would you say to someone considering volunteering?
Along with their answers, ask for a photo! It could be a picture of them serving, a headshot, or even a fun candid moment. Even better, snap one yourself the next time you serve together.
4. Design Your Social Media Posts
Use a consistent template for all your spotlights to create a cohesive look. You can use tools like Canva to design engaging posts with their photo, a short quote, and a thank-you message. Example caption:
💙 Volunteer Spotlight: [Volunteer’s Name] 💙
[Volunteer’s Name] has been faithfully serving in [ministry area] for [time frame]! When asked why they love volunteering, they said:
📢 “[Insert their quote]”
We are so grateful for [Volunteer’s Name] and their heart for serving! Help us celebrate them in the comments below. 👏💙
5. Post & Engage
- Share the spotlight posts on Facebook, Instagram, and even church email newsletters.
- Encourage engagement by tagging the volunteer (if they’re comfortable with it) and inviting others to comment with words of appreciation.
Public appreciation does more than just thank volunteers—it encourages others to serve, builds community, and reminds everyone of the impact volunteers have on ministry.
