Vacation Bible School (VBS) isn’t just a fun summer event, it’s one of the most effective outreach tools of the church. According to It’s Worth It: Uncovering How One Week Can Transform Your Church by Landry Holmes, VBS plays a significant role in church growth and evangelism. Research shows that 25% of baptisms in Southern Baptist churches can be traced back to decisions made during VBS. Each year, over 2.5 million kids and adults participate, and for many, it’s their first meaningful connection with a church. Additionally, 10% of churches report that new families begin attending because of their experience with VBS. These numbers highlight why the time, energy, and resources invested in VBS truly are worth it—it’s not just an event, but a catalyst for lifelong faith journeys.
Despite the inspiring statistics, it’s easy for a leader to feel discouraged, stressed, or anxious. Maybe the number of children registered is smaller than you hoped, volunteers have been hard to find, or your budget isn’t stretching as far as you expected. The hustle and bustle leading up to VBS can make discouragement feel inevitable. But you’re not in this alone! Be encouraged by other Kids Ministry leaders who have faced the same challenges, and let their words uplift and strengthen your spirit and trust in the Lord.
“Pray and pray some more. Don’t let perfection be the enemy either, otherwise you are losing sight of what it is all about. Do your best, ask for help, and keep a grateful heart. Be grateful that you get to be a part of such an important ministry in the life of a child, that God called you to serve in His name.” Danna D.E.
“I didn’t grow up in church. The only exposure I had was a few visits to church by a neighbor and the occasional VBS at the church next door. The decorations, snacks, and music are all great. That wasn’t what planted the seeds, though. It was the willing and loving hearts that saw a sad, hurting, broken child and taught her that she was worthy of God’s love. I am now a pastor’s wife, director of a Christian school, and Children’s Ministry director. I am proof of how important VBS and Children’s Ministry are. Pray through every step. Plant the seeds and trust Him to grow them. Whatever you do is enough. If it’s just 1 child, it may be everything to that 1 child.” Erika M.
“God is ahead of you. Do what you can and seek help and guidance from others. Remember that God already knows who will be attending and will lead you.” Eve W.
“God is waiting and ready to change lives! Be faithful to what He has called you to and trust that He will move!” Jared S.
“Gather a prayer partner or two, spend time praying and in the Word. Study the lessons the kids will be learning and see what God has for you. God sees you, God cares about you, God loves you, God forgives you, and God keeps His promises. Don’t worry about all the decorations or buying all the stuff. A few things, keep it simple, and let God work through you. He will do great things!” Penny R.
“We are doing this for God’s glory. You do your best for Him, love the children, show them God’s love. That is all that matters. If we do not finish everything or run out of something we will survive. Just give it all to God for His glory.” Rita D.P.
“Take a breath, have a few people come alongside you to help you, and PRAY! God has equipped you for this calling and just take it moment by moment. Seek out ideas and help from VBS communities!” Jessica C.
