Casting Vision for Kids Ministry

May 23, 2025 | Kids Ministry

By: Crystal Mazzuca

For many churches, fall marks the beginning of a new ministry year. Kids are returning to school. Programs are starting back up. This is the perfect season for growing your team and renewing passion for those serving in kids ministry.

One of the best ways we can start a ministry year is by casting and communicating a compelling vision for where God is calling us to go and how we are going to get there.

Know Your “Why”

Start by spending some time in prayer, reading the Bible, and humbly asking God for inspiration and direction. Remind yourself of your personal “why”—why you are serving in kids ministry. Then, take time to review your church’s mission or vision statement and how your kids ministry purpose aligns with the overall mission and direction of the church. As you clarify your own “why” and the “why” of your ministry, you will grow inspired and equipped to share with your team.

Know Your “Now”

Even as you look forward to what God will do in and through your ministry, look back and evaluate your ministry as well. What has been working well? Where are we falling short? What are our strengths and weaknesses? Include other leaders and volunteers in the conversation to get a more robust evaluation. Use this evaluation to influence the plan you develop for carrying out your vision.

Know Your “Where”

Where is God calling you to go, or what is He calling you to do? Is God calling you to increase your outreach efforts? Is He calling you to provide intentional discipleship, training, and connection for families? The more specific your goals, the better you will be able to develop a plan for reaching those goals and communicating them with your team.

Know Your “How”

After you clarify your why, now, and where, explore your strengths and weaknesses as you set goals and develop strategies for how you will accomplish your vision. This can be the key between a vision that exists as a good idea and a vision that people will actually accomplish. Identify the key steps, programs, and resources you need to accomplish your vision.

Cast Your Vision

Share your vision with your team, your families, and your church. Get them excited about the vision God has placed on your heart for your ministry. Invite them to participate in specific ways. Build unity around the part that everyone has to play.

Defining and implementing God’s vision for your ministry will help launch an incredible and impactful ministry year.
