Week after week you show up big for the kids in your ministry. You lead water balloon relays, craft masterpieces, and teach about Jesus with all the joy you can muster. But when the last cup of goldfish has been handed out and the last child is picked up, many of you may collapse into the weekday running on empty.
So here’s a gentle reminder, friend: you deserve a Fun Friday too.
I’m talking about a soul-nourishing, joy-filled, Jesus-centered kind of day. The kind that recharges your heart so you can keep pouring into others.
Ministry isn’t just about what you do. It’s also about who you are. And rest is part of God’s design for sustainable, Spirit-filled leadership. Remember how Jesus Himself modeled stepping away from the crowd?
“Yet he often withdrew to deserted places and prayed.” – Luke 5:16 (CSB)
If our Savior made time for quiet and refreshment, how much more do you need it?
Have Your Own “Fun Friday”
1. Worship Walk
Put on your favorite worship playlist and take a slow walk in a beautiful place. Let nature preach a sermon to your soul.
“He lets me lie down in green pastures;
he leads me beside quiet waters.
He renews my life;
he leads me along the right paths
for his name’s sake.” – Psalm 23:2–3 (CSB)
2. Creative Retreat
Grab some paints, a coloring book, or a journal. We often provide activity pages and crafts for the kids in your ministry, now is your chance to enjoy creative time on your own!
3. Coffee + Bible Catch-Up
Head to your favorite coffee shop and linger in a passage you’ve been meaning to reread. Not for teaching, just for you. Don’t lesson plan this time, just focus on your own relationship with the Lord.
4. Mini Sabbath
Declare a few hours “off limits” to church emails, lesson planning, and errands. Take a nap. Watch a movie. Sit in silence. Rest in the Lord’s presence and allow your cup to be refilled.
“For the Lord God, the Holy One of Israel, has said:
‘You will be delivered by returning and resting;
your strength will lie in quiet confidence.” – Isaiah 30:15 (CSB)
5. Fun Friday with Friends
Go bowling. Try a new food truck. Laugh hard with people who love you for you, not your ministry title. Let them pour into you so you can pour into others.
When you take time to refuel, you lead from abundance instead of burnout. Your joy returns. Your creativity flows. Your love for those kids, and their families, grows deeper, not wearier.
So this summer make space for your kind of fun. Not as a luxury, but as an act of faith. You’re not letting anyone down. You’re leaning into the rhythms of grace. Thank you for all you do for the kids in your ministry!
