Be the Light This Fall: Creative Missional Ideas for Halloween
What’s your goal this upcoming fall season? Just be the light! Whether you’re hosting, going, or serving—let your presence reflect Jesus.
If you’re still planning your fall outreach or looking to mix things up this year, here are a few fresh, creative ways to share the love of Christ with your neighbors:
Fall Outreach Ideas to Spark Connection
1. Take Your Fall Festival Into the Community
Instead of (or in addition to) hosting on church grounds, bring the whole event—bounce houses, games, food, music—to a local park or neighborhood green space. Much like a Backyard Kids Club, this approach meets families where they are and creates a welcoming environment for new connections. Put out flyers or yard signs ahead of time and get ready for a big turnout!
2. Go Mobile with Trunk or Treat
Trunk or Treats are a fall favorite, but what if you moved the event to a mall parking lot, sports complex, or school lot? A highly visible location could help you reach families who might never pull into a church parking lot. Partner with local businesses or recreation centers to make it happen.
3. Small Group Trick-or-Treat Connection
Encourage your kids ministry or small group leaders to host trick-or-treat gatherings in their neighborhoods. Start with a simple dinner at someone’s home, then go out together as a group. Have a few adults stay behind to pass out candy and chat with other parents. It’s a simple, natural way to build relationships and help families connect with your ministry leaders outside of church walls.
4. Offer a Comfort Station
Set up a water or hot chocolate tent in your front yard or church lawn on Halloween night. Add cozy quilts, lawn chairs, and maybe a firepit if possible. This gives tired parents a place to sit while kids trick-or-treat and creates a space for genuine conversations to start.
5. Create a Simple Photo Booth
Set up a fall-themed photo booth with a large frame, hay bales, or pumpkins. Snap photos of costumed kids (only with parents present) and collect basic info so you can send the pictures to them later. Add a spot on your info card to ask if they have a church home, then follow up with an invite and a personal touch!
