Looking for a meaningful way to teach kids about compassion and service? Blessing Bags Assembly is a perfect hands-on project that shows children how to love their neighbors in practical ways. Here’s how to organize one at your church!
What You’ll Need
Start by gathering supplies that will go into each bag. Essential items include travel-size toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo), socks, non-perishable snacks like granola bars, bottled water, hand wipes, and small first aid items. You’ll also want gallon-size ziplock bags or reusable tote bags to hold everything.
Consider asking your congregation to donate supplies in the weeks leading up to the event. Create a sign-up list or place collection bins in your lobby. Kids can also make encouraging note cards to include in each bag—these personal touches mean the world to recipients.
Setting Up Your Assembly
Organize your space like an assembly line with stations for different items. This keeps kids engaged and helps them work efficiently together. Younger children can add snacks and socks, while older kids can organize toiletries and seal the bags.
Plan for about 45-60 minutes of assembly time. Play upbeat music, and take a moment at the beginning to talk with kids about why you’re serving and who will receive these bags. Pray together before you start packing.
Making the Delivery
Contact local homeless shelters or outreach ministries ahead of time to coordinate delivery. Many organizations are grateful for these donations and can tell you exactly what items are most needed in your community. If possible, arrange for a few parent volunteers to deliver the bags and share photos with the kids later.
The Impact
Blessing Bags teach children that they’re never too young to make a difference. They learn that following Jesus means taking action to help others, and they experience the joy of serving together as a community.
