The Importance of Growing as a Ministry Leader

January 29, 2026 | Kids Ministry

By: Rachel Riquelme

Kids often say, “When I grow up, I will … ,” and they add something really fun like “eat candy for dinner,” “have as many pets as I want,” “stay up every night,” or “have a house with a big slide,” as if real life begins at adulthood. But the truth is, every stage matters, and the growth that occurs along the way is part of the journey. Leadership works the same way. It’s not about accepting a position and staying the same; instead, it’s about continually developing, learning from others, and embracing change along the way. Three things that every leader can do to grow and embrace the journey are to commit to ongoing training, be willing to learn from others, and be open to change.

1. Commit to Ongoing Training
Training is more than a one-time event; it’s a continual part of the growth process. Ministry leaders who invest in conferences, courses, and leadership development programs gain fresh insights, new perspectives, and practical tools to better serve the children and families in their ministries and the volunteers they lead. Training equips you to be prepared to handle challenges with compassion and confidence, which, in turn, helps you lead with clarity.

2. Learn from Others
Surround yourself with mentors, peers, and experienced leaders who can offer wisdom, prayer, and perspective. Listening to others’ experiences helps you navigate difficult situations and discover new approaches to ministry. Collaboration fosters humility and community, reminding us that leadership is a shared journey. Look for leaders who can mentor you and leaders you can invest in, as well.

3. Be Open to Change
Unchanging truth anchors us, but the methods we use must adapt to changing cultures and needs. Being open to change doesn’t mean compromising values or chasing every new trend that comes our way. Instead, it means finding new ways to build belonging, communicate, and connect as we share the timeless truths of the gospel. Flexibility and creativity allow you to remain relevant and impactful in a world that is constantly changing.

Growth as a ministry leader is vital. By embracing training, learning from others, and staying open to change, you cultivate a culture of leadership that allows you to lead with wisdom, compassion, and influence. The best leaders are those who never stop growing.
