The role of a Kids Minister may be one of the most underestimated positions on a church staff, but it could also be the most strategic seat at the leadership table. From this vantage point, kids ministry leaders have something few others do: meaningful access to every generation represented in the church. When leveraged intentionally, this seat becomes a catalyst for gospel formation across the entire body. That reality places kids ministers at the intersection of influence, discipleship, and community.
Potentially every generation is represented in Kids Ministry on any given Sunday:
Gen Beta Babies
The youngest members of the church—infants and toddlers—may not yet understand words, but their spiritual formation has already begun. Kids ministry shapes the environment where parents feel safe, supported, and confident bringing their children to church. This is where trust is built and habits are formed. A calm, secure nursery often determines whether a family will return.
Gen Alpha Kids
Generation Alpha is growing up in a hyper-digital, highly curated world. Kids ministry may be the most consistent place they encounter biblical truth and Christ-centered community. Through age-appropriate teaching and relational leaders, Kids Ministers help anchor Alpha kids in the truth of God’s Word before competing narratives take root.
Gen Z Students and Young Adults
Many student leaders, interns, and volunteers are Gen Z. Kids ministry becomes a training ground for leadership, theology, and discipleship. When Gen Z serves kids, they are discipled themselves—learning responsibility, consistency, and how to communicate the gospel clearly. These young leaders are not just helpers; they are future pastors, parents, and culture shapers.
Millennial Parents
Millennials are now the primary parents in kids ministry spaces. They are deeply invested in their children and hungry for guidance—but often overwhelmed. Kids ministers can disciple parents by reinforcing biblical truths, providing practical tools, and partnering with them in faith formation.
Gen X and Boomer Grandparents
Grandparents are often the quiet backbone of the church, often serving, praying, and supporting families behind the scenes. Kids ministry offers them a place to invest their wisdom, time, and spiritual legacy. When grandparents are invited into the mission, intergenerational discipleship flourishes.
It’s time to wrap the whole church around the next generation. This should not be the responsibility of one ministry alone. Kids ministers are uniquely positioned to invite the entire church into an urgent opportunity: discipling children of all ages while pouring into their families. This happens by cultivating a thriving community of volunteers and leaders who serve together, aligned in mission and vision, with a singular focus on gospel transformation.
So how can kids ministers leverage this strategic seat as they develop ministry plans?
- Think beyond weekly programming to long-term spiritual formation not only for kids, but also their families.
- Build towards helping disciple volunteers, not just schedule them.
- Partner intentionally with parents through communication and resources.
- Invite multiple generations to serve and lead together.
- Advocate for the next generation in leadership conversations and planning rooms.
By leveraging this strategic seat, kids ministers don’t just lead kids. They have the opportunity to influence every generation for His glory!
