Why Didn\’t Somebody Tell Me That (Part 7)

June 3, 2013 | Kids Ministry

EmeottEvery Hill Is NOT Worth Dying On!

This one took me a while to get through my thick head.  I believe that everything I had ever been  taught was the truth, the absolute truth, and could not be challenged and I was not supposed to change my mind or opinion.  I was wrong.

For me I was décor.  I was sure that placing murals or other forms of decoration apart from pastels in the preschool and children’s ministry space would certainly have my license to practice Kids ministry revoked. Somewhere I read, was taught, and was convinced that too much color just wasn’t good.  I was wrong. Please friends… don’t write and try to convince me that I am crazy for giving up on my formal education… that’s not the point of this post.  The point is that we need to decide what is worth dying for and put everything else into a proper perspective.

As a young Kids Minister I had the misconception that I knew everything and anyone who disagreed with me was just wrong (not sure it had anything to do with being a Kids Minister, but maybe it was because I was young). That attitude really got me nowhere and at the end of the day I realized that I wasn’t always right and even when I was… it wasn’t always worth losing the war just to claim a small victory with a small battle.

Ministry philosophy guides your choice of battles (check out the second post in this series, “Know What You Believe and Why You Believe It!). If you’re strong in your philosophy, you’ll know when to pull out the big guns, the troops, and the reinforcements and really take a stand.  I think my favorite saying has been for some time now, “Don’t sweat the small stuff.”

So, here you go… one more time, “Every Hill is NOT Worth Dying On!”
